Equality for everyone

Today, the California Supreme Court made the ruling to uphold the ridiculous prop8 legislation, which bans gay marriage. I usually do not like voicing my "political" opinions but I don't even consider this a "political" issue because it has NOTHING to do with politics.

Let me preface this by saying, although I respect everyone's values and beliefs, I feel the need to voice my own b/c this is one current issue that I have a very strong opinion on.

I'm so frustrated b/c I felt that our country was finally moving in the right direction when it comes to equality and people's (and by that I mean EVERYONE'S) rights. I don't understand how people can be so ignorant and close-minded. There are of course, religious beliefs but what happened to the separation of church and state? B/c I think in the case of Gay Marriage, that line has become extremely blurred.

If you look back on the history of our country, every rights movement has resulted in a positive outcome. The civil rights movement, women's rights etc. have all caused controversy (and in some cases still do) but in the end was integration a good thing for our country? Absolutely. My point in all this being: just because someone is different than you, does NOT mean they don't deserve the same rights as you and I. People don't choose to be gay, I mean come on, would you ever want a life of ridicule, prejudice, and stereotyping? No. If two people love each other and are committed to one another, they deserve the right to say their vows and commit to one another in the form of marriage.

After living in Europe for some time, I've seen how liberal thinking and acceptance of others can really have a positive affect on a country and it's people. Where as the US spends a countless amount of time and energy on topics such as gay marriage, countries in other parts of the world don't even make it an issue, and everything is going great for them. There are WAY more important issues like the environment, education, and healthcare so why the hell would we even make Gay Marriage a big deal??

Ughhhh I'm sorry I am so incredibly mad and sad right now. I have friends and several people who are important to me that could be affected by this, and I think it's time that America wakes the hell up and realizes that this issue is not going away anytime soon, and it's just going to keep being fought against until everyone gets the rights they deserve as a human and a US citizen.

I hope prop8 goes to hell, I hate it! Whether you are gay/straight/bisexual/transgender/black/white/red/yellow/whatever, you deserve the same rights as everyone else. Don't give up the fight!
